Miss America Cassie Donegan has heard the chatter regarding her pageant glam and has the perfect response to the online criticism.
After Donegan, 28, was awarded the crown for Miss America on Sunday, September 7, social media trolls made unkind comments about her stage makeup. Donegan saw the comments and opened up to People about the situation on Tuesday, September 9.
“I’m just a normal person,” she said. “No, I don’t want to hear people ever say anything negative, especially about my appearance, but I also respect that the internet is a public space and that people have the right to their opinion to be able to share that, and no one’s going to be everyone’s favorite all of the time.”
The pageant queen continued, “I’m just going to do my best to love everyone and care about everyone, because at the end of the day, if even just one person has felt touched in some way or seen or loved through me as Miss America, then I’ve done my job. And that’s the most important thing.”
When it comes to reading comments online, Donegan said she’s selective about what she chooses to dwell on.
“Often you do have to just pick and choose what you allow yourself to digest,” she said. “I think that’s something that’s been a really useful tool, really leaning into those who are lifting me up, loving me and holding me high, and choosing to focus on the positivity that’s happening in the moment.”

While competing for Miss America, Donegan rocked a full beat, including foundation, extra rosy cheeks, long lashes and glossy lips. Her strawberry blonde hair was parted to the side and styled in an updo with her face-framing pieces left out. The official Miss America TikTok account shared a zoomed-in clip of Donegan after she was crowned, to which fans shared their thoughts on her glam in the comments section.
“Makeup artist didn’t want her to win,” one wrote, while another added, “She’s beautiful but needs a new makeup artist.”
Other followers defended her look, writing, “People saying stuff about her makeup don’t understand stage makeup, it’s very common with cheer, dance and pageants. The lighting washes you out so what looks crazy off stage looks really good on stage that’s why it’s always soo much bolder.”
A second fan wrote, “SOOOO DESERVING CONGRATULATIONS QUEEN,” while a third commented, “CASSIE IS BEAUTIFUL. And she is MISS AMERICA.”
