A California mom who asked her husband to cut their kids a piece of watermelon couldn’t believe what he produced for them.
Kara Brosemer (@kbrosemer) needed to use the bathroom when she asked her husband to step in to grab a snack for their son and daughter.
She posted a clip on TikTok after she had returned and wasn’t prepared for what they were eating.
Instead of cutting the watermelon into small, kid-friendly bite-sized chunks, the husband carved giant slices—almost as big as their heads.
“I came back out to them eating what I’d describe as cartoon pieces of watermelon,” the 28-year-old told Newsweek. “I immediately started laughing and took out my phone to capture the moment.”
Of course, while many dads are fully capable of being full-time caregivers, some may not have had the same volume of hands-on, day-to-day parenting reps as moms.
For example, Brosemer told Newsweek her husband is out of the house for long periods of time.
One 2020 study in the Journal of Family Psychology found that mothers tend to be more confident and consistent in caregiving tasks, while fathers often wait for instruction to defer to the mom’s judgment.
“When [my husband] is home, his quirky parenting style always keeps us laughing and gives us a fun break from our routine,” Brosemer said.
Thankfully, their kids didn’t seem to mind the giant pieces of watermelon with big smiles on their faces as they ate.
Brosemer’s clip has gone viral in a matter of days, amassing 1.4 million views. Hundreds of users commented on the watermelon mishap, with many siding with the dad.
“They’re occupied, sitting quietly eating that watermelon slice. They won’t ask for more for a while. I see your side but dad takes the win on this one,” user @taaabsss commented.
“Now this the only way they will ever want to eat watermelon for the rest of their lives,” another wrote.
A third user commented, “Your daughter is in her world perfectly content. Your son can’t believe his luck. It’s a win.”
“The video has blown up pretty quickly,” Brosemer said. “People have been having a blast watching it, giving us all a much-needed laugh.”
