There was “not a dry eye in the shelter” after one of the Humane Society of Broward County’s longest‑staying residents finally found a forever home.
In a heart‑tugging video shared by the Florida shelter, a dog named Nick is seen leaving the building for the final time, smothering his new owner with affection.
“Our sweet golden boy Nick, one of our longest residents, finally found his person,” the shelter wrote. “And oh did he pick a good one. She already called to tell us he is the most amazing dog and they are going to have a beautiful life together, forever.”
The post added: “Nick made sure to collect every last kiss and belly rub on his way out the door. After everything he has been through, he gets to spend the rest of his years loved, safe, and exactly where he belongs. We are so happy for him and his mom.”
The shelter told Newsweek that Nick’s road to adoption had been a long one. They said he is a Lab mix who came to the Humane Society of Broward County as a transfer from a rural shelter, where he had spent years being overlooked because of low adoption traffic. He was brought in ahead of a winter freeze to give him refuge indoors—and a better chance at finding a home.
While Nick remained sweet and social during his time at the shelter, staff said extended kennel stays can be stressful. He spent more than two months at the Broward County shelter and was ready for the comfort and stability of a permanent home.
Described as affectionate, well‑mannered and deeply people‑oriented, Nick is potty trained, walks well on a leash and loves fetch, belly rubs and attention. Staff even nicknamed him “Rambling Nick” because of his soft, silly and talkative bark.
Watching him leave was emotional for staff. One team member said Nick’s adoption was one of the more difficult goodbyes, explaining they had grown attached to his calm, goofy personality and loving nature.
In a touching twist, Nick had already enjoyed what staff called his “greatest adventure yet” earlier that same day. A volunteer took him out for a car ride, pup cups, a pet‑store visit and even helped him pick out the outfit he’s wearing in the adoption video. He was adopted within an hour of returning.
The video quickly drew an outpouring of support online.
“No dry eyes on the internet either,” said Lora Jo.
“Thank you for Adopting Nick thank you to the staff and volunteer please help save lives by choosing to adopt,” said Ivette.
“Thank you for adopting this sweet pup that waited so long for his forever home. Worth the wait and to all advocates at Humane Society of Broward County, wish all the shelters were like you,” shared another user.
