The beach is back!
NYC beaches are officially open for the summer, and Mayor Adams laid out a plan Friday to ensure New Yorkers stay safe while enjoying the rivieras of the Big Apple.
The safety strategy will seek to ensure that locals are protected “via air, land, and sea” in a multi-agency effort.
“The official summer season in the city starts today and as we stay in the Bronx, we’re outside,” said Mayor Adams at Orchard beach in The Bronx Friday morning.
“We want all New Yorkers to enjoy the summer in the greatest city in the world, and we have so many activities that are happening, but we must do it in a safe way,” he said.
The framework covers crime, heat and fire safety, water and beach safety, street safety, and youth and community programs.
The NYPD will be launching its 2025 summer crime reduction plan, which will add more than 1,500 officers to posts in 70 summer deployment zones. The police department also added a ‘quality of life division’ which will enforce noise complaints, illegal mopeds, and other concerns that tend to ramp up over the warmer months.
“On land, in the air, or by sea, the men and women of the New York City Police Department will be keeping New Yorkers safe this summer,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Friday.
The emergency management division is also launching a ‘Beat the Heat campaign’ which shares preventative measures in extreme heat — in which more than 500 New Yorkers die each year. The city has designated ‘cooling centers’ that can be found on a map on the city’s website.
At city beaches, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM — and swimming is prohibited outside of those hours. Lifeguards will also be manning public outdoor pools, which open for the season Friday, June 27, daily between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Beach goers may also notice drones flying overhead this summer. The tech will be monitoring shark activity and can even throw flotation devices to swimmers in danger.
“Although the weather tells a different story, the summer season is underway, and the FDNY is ready for it,” said FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker, as cloudy, rainy weather dipped into the low 50s Friday..
“In coordination with our agency partners, the FDNY is prepared to patrol our beaches on land and over water, with our beach Gators and our drones. We know the warm weather brings many opportunities for enjoying the outdoors and the water, and our members will be there to make sure that help is available for New Yorkers who need it.”
