For every beautiful routine and performance, there is the risk of those maneuvers made at the Winter Olympic Games, and fans were reminded of that dire fact on Wednesday after a terrifying crash in the women’s snowboard halfpipe competition.
Chinese snowboarder Liu Jiayu went up for a spin and didn’t rotate properly on the way down, crashing forward and tumbling across the snow as her body crunched under the impact.
The 33-year-old veteran won silver in snowboarding at the 2018 PyeongChang Games in South Korea.

A prodigy in snowboarding, Jiayu made her Olympic debut in 2010 in Vancouver. During her time as a professional snowboarder, she’s won six World Cup titles and been one of the best Asian snowboarders in the world.
On Wednesday, though, it was the scariest fall of her career, and she was transported to a local medical center.
Although the crash was scary, there was some good news to come out of the incident as Wednesday came to a close: Jiayu did not suffer any spinal injury from her fall, which was a concern following how she landed on the snow.
Although taken off on a stretcher, she was said to have been conscious during her transportation to the hospital.
The Chinese snowboard team manager who accompanied Jiayu affirmed that imaging results indicated no abnormalities in her spine.
