A dog’s heartbreaking goodbye to his little sister has left the internet in tears.
Vanessa, 25, from California, shared the emotional moment on TikTok (@vnssxa), where her partner gently guided their dog Kane on a leash to say a final farewell to his sister Luna. The pair had been inseparable since they were both eight weeks old. In the video, Kane, a large black-and-white dog, appears confused as he sniffs around the room—until the moment his nose gently touches Luna’s, in what looks like a final kiss. The video garnered 1.2 million views and 167,500 likes on the platform.
Vanessa told Newsweek they had originally planned for Kane to be present during Luna’s passing, but their veterinarian advised against it, fearing it could cause her anxiety or another seizure.
“We decided to allow him to see her after she passed. We wanted Kane to understand that she didn’t abandon him,” Vanessa told Newsweek.
“We did not want him wondering or looking for her. We were heartbroken to see her go and see Kane’s sadness for her. My husband and I bawled like babies. She took a piece of all of our hearts when she passed,” she added.
Vanessa recalled the moment that changed their lives forever. In the early hours of June 24, 2025, she was jolted awake by a strange banging sound downstairs. While her husband, baby, and she slept upstairs, the dogs usually roamed freely below. Assuming Luna had got into mischief as usual, Vanessa went to investigate. What she found was devastating—Luna was having a seizure at the bottom of the stairs.
Luna was shaking uncontrollably, her limbs stiff, her body rolling violently.
When Vanessa and her husband reached her, she suddenly stopped moving, appearing to slip into a coma. They rushed her to an emergency vet, where she remained unresponsive for eight hours despite medication and monitoring. With no sign of recovery and suspected brain damage, the couple made the heart-wrenching decision to let her go.
Luna, born on April 10, 2022, had a big personality packed into a small, bossy frame. Though mellow overall, she always got her way with Kane—stealing his treats, toys, and even kicking him off the best dog bed. She’d let out a grumble when humans told her “no,” but she was endlessly gentle with people, especially children.
A notorious counter-surfer, Luna would sneak kitchen items to chew when left alone too long. Still, she was a cuddle bug who loved being close to her family, especially her baby human sister.
Kane, born December 21, 2021, is 100 pounds of clumsy, hyper, hard-headed energy. Vanessa said he acts like a teenage boy—always jumping on people with excitement and stealing socks and undergarments in hopes of being chased.
Despite his size and mischief, Kane shares Luna’s affectionate nature and has always been a devoted cuddle companion.
The unexpected loss of Luna left the family shattered. The house, once filled with playful chaos, suddenly felt too quiet. Vanessa said Kane lost his appetite and showed signs of depression in the days that followed, although he is slowly adjusting.
The bond between the two dogs was deep. Though not biological siblings, Kane and Luna had grown up together and behaved like true brother and sister. They’d nip playfully, argue over couch space, and do everything side by side. Vanessa said they each had human-like personalities, and it was clear Kane is grieving the loss of his best friend.
Looking back, Vanessa now recognizes subtle behavioral changes in Luna—circling, walking the perimeter of the house, increased fear and anxiety—that might have pointed to neurological issues. At the time, she thought they were harmless quirks.
The video has touched TikTok users, many of whom shared their own stories of pet loss and the importance of letting surviving animals say goodbye.
“I’ve put two dogs down in my life time. The first one his brother didn’t get a goodbye, he looked and cried for weeks/months! Broke my heart. This time around they spent a day full of fun, cuddles, treats and runs and I brought home the blanket he was wrapped in. His brother slept on it for weeks. I felt it helped this time around for them,” shared one user.
“We said goodbye to our senior dog June 8. I was nervous when our other dog started sniffing her lifeless body. The vet said that’s a good thing bc he can process it. I noticed he doesn’t look for her. It’s like he knows she’s gone. Sweet dreams to your pup,” added another.
“Animals know! When our dog passed in May this year her dad and siblings got restless when she still was alive before she passed at the vet we told her to visit her siblings at the house to say goodbye. When she passed they stayed up for a bit then went back to sleep. Sorry for your loss,” wrote Ryan.
“This absolutely must be done for the other dog. I gave my surviving dog the collar he was wearing when he passed and she carried it around and wandered in/out of his crate for a couple of days grieving for him. She understood. I know it helped her deal with his sudden absence,” said another commenter.
