A couple’s attempt at a classic gender reveal took an unexpected turn when their cake showed absolutely no signs of blue or pink inside.
Matthew, 33, Reddit user u/m4tty33, shared the mishap in the subreddit r/mildlyinfuriating, where the post quickly took off, earning over 45,000 upvotes. Alongside a photo of the deceptively plain vanilla sponge, the user wrote: “Ordered a gender reveal cake and the bakery forgot to dye the cake the gender color.”
It is the couple’s first baby, so, as soon as they found out the gender, Matthew’s sisters urged him to do a gender reveal. The time came to cut into the cake, and Matthew let his parents do the honors; they opted to use wine glasses so the cake would not be revealed when they lifted the knife.
Matthew told Newsweek: “Everyone was anxious and anticipation was high and, when they removed the cups, it was unbelievable. I looked at my wife and saw the color drain from her face. Everyone was asking, ‘Is it a girl?’ since they saw strawberries on the inside.
“The whole reveal was ruined, and we just had to go ahead and tell them that the baby is a boy. We were looking forward to this for so long, and this is our first baby, and we were just left devastated.”
For those unfamiliar, gender-reveal cakes are designed to keep a baby’s gender a surprise until the expectant parents cut into the dessert. Typically, the inside of the cake is dyed pink or blue to indicate a girl or boy.
Matthew’s wife chose a color and design she liked, and the intention was for the inside to be blue, with additional strawberries for flavor.
“The day came, we picked up the cake, and my wife already had a bad feeling. She went in to pick up the cake and the employees seemed lost. They couldn’t locate the cake, and they had to go to the baker and back, and they finally located it. We even made jokes about what if they forgot to dye in the inside,” Matthew said.
“My wife also bought the two cute bears and the stick-in prop. My sister recommended that we use wine cups instead of a knife so the cake would not be revealed when you lift the knife,” he added.
However, when this couple cut into their cake, they found no colorful sponge—just strawberries and plain vanilla.
Reddit users quickly flooded the comments with jokes and theories. “Plot twist you’re actually having twins and the bears on top were the reveal,” one user posted.
“I had twins in April. They are basically as wild as bears,” another commented.
Others leaned into the absurdity of the non-reveal, writing:
“Congratulations! It’s a baby!!”
“Congratulations! It’s a human.”
“Congratulations! Your baby is strawberry gender.”
While some commenters criticized the concept of gender reveals altogether—”Gender reveals are stupid. But yes, you should’ve gotten what you paid for,” wrote one user—the majority were simply amused by the wholesome chaos of the situation.
When someone asked if the pink jam might have been the intended reveal, the original poster replied: the red was just strawberries. The bakery was supposed to dye the entire vanilla sponge blue, since they had opted for a non-flavored cake. Had they chosen a flavored version, the inside frosting would have been colored instead.
Fortunately, the bakery took responsibility for the mishap. The couple contacted them via email, received an apology, and were issued a full refund.
