The Kansas City Chiefs (6-7) are playing with their backs against the wall for the remainder of the NFL season heading into Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
They are already eliminated from capturing the AFC West title, snapping a 10-year divisional winning streak for the franchise, and find themselves firmly on the outside of the playoff picture. To make the postseason, they likely need to win their final four games while receiving help from other teams.
It’s been a frustrating season for a Chiefs team that reached the Super Bowl just last year. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming off a three-interception outing against Houston and recently saw a dramatic slide in the NFL’s weekly quarterback rankings from writer Nick Shook.
Mahomes dropped all the way from No. 7 to No. 12, marking the lowest he’s been ranked all season. The top six quarterbacks are classified as Tier 1, while Mahomes now falls into Tier 2, just behind Brock Purdy, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Sam Darnold, and Jared Goff, who occupy spots No. 7 through No. 11.

“Sunday night’s loss to the Texans might have been the swan song for the Chiefs dynasty,” Shook wrote. “Everything seems difficult for them, and Patrick Mahomes can’t lift the team out of the mess. He accounted for 10 straight passes that were either incomplete or intercepted and suffered because of his teammates’ lack of execution at the other end of his passes. Oddly, his passes didn’t look great out of his hand either, displaying a downward trajectory that mirrors the team’s current direction.”
Through 13 games this season, Mahomes is completing 63.1% of his passes for 3,398 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He’s also added 407 rushing yards with four rushing touchdowns and has lost three fumbles.
