The New England Patriots aren’t benching Rhamondre Stevenson despite pressure from the fanbase to do so.
Much of that pressure comes from the team drafting Tre’Veyon Henderson in the second round of the draft in April, and the fans want to see him become more of a staple in the offense.
Head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed it will continue to be a situational decision as to which running back gets used, and Stevenson will keep his role.
“We have different packages,” Vrabel told ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “I don’t know what the first package is, but if you’re asking me if Stevenson is on some sort of discipline, no. The discipline is we need our best players to play in a game and do their job and take care of the football.”
Stevenson certainly isn’t the best when it comes to not turning over the ball. He had 14 fumbles through his first four seasons and has already fumbled twice this season.
Vrabel, however, didn’t stop there.
“Drake [Maye] had an interception and a fumble, but we’re not going to play Josh [Dobbs] right now,” Vrabel added. “We have to fix those things, the people around them have to be better, and I’m confident we will.”
Comparing your franchise quarterback to a borderline backup running back is a crazy comparison. However, it allows Vrabel to make his point clear to reporters and to the fans: Stevenson isn’t going anywhere for now.
If his turnover problems continue, then the Patriots coaching staff will have to re-evaluate how many carries, if any, he receives.
