Good morning, and welcome to our live news blog for Wednesday, October 30.
Making headlines today are calls for rodent baits to be banned over fears they may be eaten by even more of our state’s native animals.
Researchers have sounded the alarm after studying what is believed to be the first case of a black cockatoo dying from rodent bait poisoning in Western Australia.
The Carnaby’s cockatoo in question was taken to a veterinary hospital in 2019 after falling from a tree in Kalamunda.
It stopped eating after days and had lost wait, before having to be euthanized. An analysis of its liver found substantial quantities of anticoagulant rodenticide, which is sold in many big-brand hardware stores.
But the question remained: how did this back cockatoo get the rodenticide into its system? The cockatoos usually subsist on nuts and seeds.
While it is hard to pinpoint exactly why the cockatoo ate the bait, there were links between declining habitat, dwindling food sources and increasing numbers of black cockatoos in human habited areas.

And are you a fan of Japanese food? Always on the lookout for the next spot to get your ramen fix? Or do you go nuts for noodles, or seek out sushi wherever you go?
Well, do we have some good news for you.
This November, Hiramatsu throws open the doors to Ginza Nana Alley, a dining precinct that will house five different food and drink establishments on Murray Street, including a couple new to Perth.
Just as Hifumiya broke new ground for our Japanese food scene, Ginza Nana Alley looks set to be equally influential, as Hiramatsu and co take a deep-dive into yokocho: Japan’s warren-like alleyways populated by intimate, singular bars and restaurants.
