The Philadelphia Phillies came into the offseason with a few big question marks surrounding their roster. The biggest question mark was Kyle Schwarber’s future, and the Phillies quickly opted to re-sign him to a massive deal early in the offseason.
JT Realmuto and Ranger Suárez were still free agents as of Wednesday, and it seems like the Phillies are at risk of losing them. Realmuto is likely going to be the team’s top priority, which means Suárez could be headed for a new home.
Paul Connor of SportsGrid predicted Suárez would bolt from Philadelphia for a deal with the Chicago Cubs this offseason.
“Reliable lefty with 3.20 ERA and 151 K in 157 IP; injury history (back issues) and velocity drop are risks, but solid mid-rotation arm,” Connor wrote.
Suárez is one of the better pitchers on the market right now, and the Phillies will likely let him go. They have enough pitching depth to comfortably let go of Suárez.
The Cubs desperately need pitching if they want to make a run at the World Series next year. They’re seemingly bound to lose Kyle Tucker in free agency because his price tag is expected to be near $400 million.
The Cubs could turn and give Suárez a deal worth over $150 million to make him their new ace for the foreseeable future. It would put the Cubs in a great spot going forward.
