The Philadelphia Phillies got some good news as their veteran starter Aaron Nola looks to bounce back from a poor start to the season and a return from injury.

Nola posted a brutal 6.16 ERA in his first nine starts of the year before being placed on the injured list with a sprained ankle. Then some soreness in his side delayed his recovery back to the mound.

But he has since begun his rehab assignments and helped to make some history in his latest start for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

“Nola allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings in a 12-1, seven-inning victory, the 287th for manager Anthony Contreras,” Ty Daubert wrote for Phillies Nation. “Contreras, who’s led the IronPigs since 2022, now holds the franchise record for managerial wins.”

That was Nola’s second outing since joining Lehigh Valley in an effort to recover and get back to the big leagues in time for a playoff push with the Phillies. His previous start was also a strong one as he tossed three scoreless innings.

The Phillies will surely welcome any good news on Nola, who hadn’t experienced a significant injury in five years before this latest trip to the injured list. And while the Phillies have one of the best big-league rotations even without Nola, ace Zack Wheeler has had trouble recovering from his last start and former All-Star Ranger Suarez saw some diminished velocity in his, so this could be perfect timing for Nola to get back on track.

Nola is expected to make at least one more rehab appearance for the IronPigs as he works to rebuild his pitch count.
