The Las Vegas Raiders were hoping that they had fixed their major need at the quarterback position during the NFL offseason when they pulled off a trade with the Seattle Seahawks for veteran signal caller Geno Smith.
While there was optimism surrounding the move when it was made, the early results haven’t panned out. Smith was given a lucrative two-year, $75 million extension after being acquired in the trade. Now, the Raiders seem lost at quarterback once again.
Smith has not played well throughout the first five games of the 2025 NFL season. He has completed 65 percent of his pass attempts for 1,176 yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions. As of right now, he leads the league in interceptions thrown.
Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Hints at Potential Roster Movement
If things do not improve throughout the remainder of the season, Las Vegas might be looking for a new quarterback in the offseason.
Thankfully, there are going to be some options available for teams needing quarterback help. For the Raiders, there is one clear replacement that should be targeted in a potential trade.
Mac Jones has revitalized his career with the San Francisco 49ers. He signed a two-year contract worth just over $8.4 million during free agency. Due to injuries that Brock Purdy is dealing with this year, Jones has found himself as the 49ers’ starter.
He has made three starts so far this season, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 905 yards, six touchdowns, and just one interception.
At just 27 years old, Jones is still young enough to be a long-term option for a team. If San Francisco would be willing to trade him, the Raiders should look into the option. Depending on the price tag, he could be a legitimate answer moving forward.
Throughout his entire career, Jones has played in 55 games. He has thrown for 11,495 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 45 interceptions in those appearances. Jones has had his ups and downs, but his time with the 49ers may get him back on track.
Deion Sanders Delivers Strong Words on Browns Trading Joe Flacco
Las Vegas has to figure out its quarterback situation. Until that happens, the Raiders will be unable to work their way back into being a playoff contender.
There is no guarantee that Jones will be made available or that Las Vegas would have interest in him, but the idea would make a lot of sense. It’s at least something to monitor heading into the offseason this year.
