The Boston Red Sox enjoyed a much-needed win on Monday against the New York Mets.
After bringing in win-now veterans like Walker Buehler, Alex Bregman and Kenley Jansen, not to mention All-Star ace Garrett Crochet, the Red Sox have been a disappointment so far. The team has lost two series in a row and has limped out to a losing record so far this season. It will need to string together more wins if it’s going to quiet the calls for some dramatic changes.
“It’s clear the Sox need something to change,” team insider Peter Abraham wrote for The Boston Globe. “They’ve been hovering around .500 all season.”
That perceived need for a significant shakeup before it’s too late drove Abraham to propose a surprising trade, which would ship leadoff hitter Jarren Duran to the Houston Astros and clear the way for a top prospect to join the big-league club.
“This is just speculation. But is there a deal to be made between the Red Sox and Astros?” Abraham wondered. “The Sox need a first baseman and a way to open a roster spot for outfield prospect Roman Anthony. The Astros are in dire need of lefthanded hitters to create better lineup balance.”
In Abraham’s proposed trade, Duran would be enough to land Isaac Paredes in exchange, a right-handed infielder who could be an answer to the Red Sox’s questions at first base.
Fans might be calling for Anthony to get his shot in the majors, but trading Duran is a tough pill to swallow.
The reigning All-Star Game Most Valuable Player has been seen as a key part of the team’s core, particularly after a breakout campaign last year. However, he is off to a harsh start at the plate so far this season.
Landing Paredes could be a decent consolation. He is slashing .265/.375/.435 with seven homers so far this season, suggesting he could bring some better balance to the Red Sox order as a righty and with his defensive versatility.
