The Boston Red Sox lost one of their key players as the Chicago Cubs reportedly agreed on a massive five-year, $175 million contract with star third baseman Alex Bregman, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Red Sox paved the way for Bregman to be their long-term third baseman by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, but ultimately, the Cubs outbid them in their pursuit of the three-time All-Star.
As Bregman’s short stint in Boston comes to a close, the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, opened up about the 31-year-old’s departure.
“Any time you are active in trying to bring a player in, it’s disappointing to lose out,” Breslow said, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “We do this job because we are competitive and we want to deliver a championship to our fans, and falling short in a pursuit is an obstacle to that. I am not going to gloss over the impact that Alex had on our season. He is a great player with a strong leadership presence in our clubhouse.
“But this job requires balancing long and short-term interests and making the best decisions for the organization, difficult as they be. It means losing out on good players sometimes. However, while we will enter the ’26 season with different personnel, there will be no less resolve to compete for the division and make a deep postseason run. I believe in the group we have while we keep working to find ways to add to it. Our goal is to deliver to our fans, the season that they deserve.”
The Red Sox have been active this offseason, trading for Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras, but Bregman’s departure in free agency is a major loss for the team. Boston has yet to make a splash in free agency this offseason as more top free agents come off the board.
