The Houston Rockets ended up winning the Kevin Durant sweepstakes, acquiring the superstar forward from the Phoenix Suns in a major blockbuster trade.
In order to get Durant, the Rockets had to give up rising star guard Jalen Green. They also traded Dillon Brooks and the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
With that No. 10 pick in the draft, the Suns were able to turn it into Duke center Khaman Maluach. He has a chance to become the long-term center that Phoenix has been searching for over the last couple of years.
Following the Durant deal, many view Houston as a potential favorite in the stacked Western Conference.

While the team did trade Green, it was able to hold onto Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson. The Rockets were also able to work out a new deal with point guard Fred VanVleet to bring him back.
Could Houston be open for more business on the trade market this offseason? That is what one NBA reporter has suggested.
According to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania via Evan Sidery of Forbes, the Rockets could consider trading young wing Cam Whitmore.
“Cam Whitmore is a potential trade candidate for the Rockets, per @ShamsCharania,” Sidery wrote on X. “Houston could look to move Whitmore for a veteran wing similar to Dillon Brooks, who they included in the Kevin Durant deal.”
Whitmore will likely be an intriguing piece on the trade block. He has a good skill-set and is still on his rookie contract.
Pacers Linked to Familiar Potential Tyrese Haliburton Replacement
During the 2024-25 NBA season with Houston, Whitmore played in 51 games and made three starts. He averaged 9.4 points, three rebounds, and one assist in 16.2 minutes per game, shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 35.5 percent from three-point distance.
At just 20 years old, Whitmore would be a wise pickup for any team who wants to add talent without a heavy price tag. He’s also a good fit for any rebuilding or re-tooling team to take a flier on.
It will be interesting to see what else the Rockets have in store this offseason. Adding Durant to the mix is a big step towards championship contention, but there are other moves that need to be made in order to ensure being able to compete against an extremely talented Western Conference.
