Adam Devine may play the youngest of the childish siblings in HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones,” but according to Adam Devine, he was recently told he was the closest to death.
Vincent D’Onofrio Says Kingpin Can’t Appear In Movies
During a conversation on the podcast “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” (via Deadline) Devine talked about chronic problems he’s experienced since he was 11 years old when he was hit by a cement truck. The “Pitch Perfect” star suffers from spasms and experiences pain if he walks, stands, or sits for too long.
When Devine went to see doctors about the issues recently, they gave him a terminal diagnosis.
“They told me I was dying,” Devine said. “Literally, within this last year, they told me that. They told me I had this disease called stiff-person syndrome. And that’s when your muscles get so tight that you then, you can no longer walk. You can no longer move, then your heart will stop beating because your heart is a muscle and it gets too tight to beat, and then you die.”
Thankfully for Devine, that wasn’t the last word on his condition. As things got worse, he went to a specialist who told him the stiff-person syndrome diagnosis was wrong.
“And he’s like, ‘You don’t have it. You do not have it,'” Devine said. “He’s like, ‘This is from your accident, from when you were a child. The spasms are a little unexplainable, but it could just be you got so tight that your body doesn’t know what to do with it. So, you’re misfiring a little bit.”
Devine has since been undergoing stem cell treatment and says he feels better than he has in a very long time.
Adam Devine is currently starring as Kelvin Gemstone in the fourth and final season of HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones.” Kelvin came out as gay to his family toward the end of the third season and has since started an LGBTQ-friendly ministry called Prism. While it has yet to be explored fully, hints were dropped earlier in the current season about repressed memories Kelvin has of men breaking into his home when he was a child.
New episodes of “The Righteous Gemstones” air Sunday night at 10 pm on HBO while streaming on Max. The fifth episode is scheduled to air this coming Sunday, with four episodes left to air in the season.
