Shilo Sanders has been waiting patiently for another opportunity as a free agent. After being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the start of the 2025 NFL season, there hasn’t been much news surrounding the son of the legendary Deion Sanders.
Despite the lack of news of late, Sanders is reportedly receiving interest from a new team following Week 3 action.
According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers brought in Sanders for a visit on Tuesday. They could use some help in the defensive secondary and Sanders is clearly a player they’re interested in.
“49ers had Shilo Sanders in today for a workout,” Schefter posted on X.
Report: San Francisco 49ers Get Huge Brock Purdy Injury Update
Obviously, the fact that the 49ers brought Sanders in for a visit doesn’t mean that they’ll sign him. However, it’s something to watch closely to see if the young defensive back will be given another chance early in the year.
So far this season, San Francisco has gone 3-0. Unfortunately, those wins have come at a high cost.
Brock Purdy has already missed time due to injury, as has star tight end George Kittle. Last week, Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending torn ACL. Once again, the 49ers have been unable to find any luck in the health department.
Bringing in Sanders would provide them with valuable defensive backfield help. He likely would not find playing time right off the bat, but there is no denying that the young safety comes with the ability to play a role if called upon.
Looking back at his last two years with the Colorado Buffaloes in college, Sanders showed off the ability to be a playmaker. In 2024, he racked up 67 total tackles to go along with a sack, a forced fumble, and two defended passes. Back in 2023, he totaled 67 tackles, four forced fumbles, an interception, a defensive touchdown, and three defended passes.
Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Doesn’t Hold Back About Vikings QB Situation
It’s possible that San Francisco will choose to pass on Sanders. However, the 49ers could choose to sign him as well.
Expect to hear more news about Sanders in the near future and an update about San Francisco’s decision. For now, this is a situation worthy monitoring.
