Stephen Curry acknowledged the Golden State Warriors’ roster uncertainty as the franchise continues to work through Jonathan Kuminga’s contract standoff, but the four-time champion said he remains confident the team will be ready when training camp begins.
In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area, Curry said he is aware of the behind-the-scenes discussions but is focused on preparing for the season alongside Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler.
“It’s a combination of all of it,” Curry said. “There is obviously stuff that I know and talking about that isn’t necessarily public, and that’s the way it’s supposed to be. The way our organization is run, me, Draymond, Jimmy [Butler] are trying to make sure we’re prepared individually and collectively to lead our team to where we’re supposed to go.”
Kuminga, 22, remains unsigned as a restricted free agent deep into the offseason. Multiple reports indicate the Warriors have offered him a two-year, $45 million deal with a team option for the second season, while Kuminga is seeking a player option. If no deal is reached, he could accept the one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer, which would prevent Golden State from trading him during the season.
Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 games last season. He added 15.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in eight playoff games, providing the Warriors with a helpful scoring option to complement Curry and Butler in the offense.
Warriors Receive Major Update on Jonathan Kuminga Situation
The Warriors are the only team yet to make a move this offseason, leaving the front office in a delicate position as the calendar inches closer to the start of camp. Curry said roster decisions ultimately fall on management, while players must be ready regardless.
“All that stuff will take care of itself,” Curry said. “It’s the front office’s job to bring the best team back. When September 29th – whatever it is – comes around and we’re suiting up for practice, we’ll be ready.”
Golden State’s biggest move came months earlier, when the team acquired Butler from the Miami Heat at the February trade deadline. The Warriors went 22-5 in the regular season when Curry and Butler shared the floor. However, injuries and inconsistency left them short of expectations, and they lost in the Western Conference Semifinals to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Warriors’ Draymond Green Fires Strong Shot at Heat After Latest Trade
The Warriors’ numerous moves, including signing Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II, are being held up by Kuminga’s unresolved free agency.
Curry, 37, is entering his 17th NBA season and has dealt with a series of injuries in recent years. He believes a full year with Butler alongside him and Green will help stabilize the Warriors as they attempt to avoid another scramble for postseason positioning.
With the Western Conference continuing to load up around them and Kuminga’s status unresolved, the Warriors face significant pressure in the weeks ahead. Curry’s message remains for the team to be ready regardless of how the roster takes shape.
