The official Tesla X account for Europe and the Middle East has released a ten-second video, along with the date 29 August, sparking speculation a new produce will be released on Friday.
Newsweek contacted Tesla for comment on Thursday outside of regular office hours.
Why It Matters
Tesla is by some margin the most valuable car company in the world and is playing a prominent role in the mass adoption of electric vehicles.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, was a prominent supporter of Donald Trump and headed the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) though he fell out dramatically with the president in June over his One Big Beautiful Bill spending package.
What To Know
On Wednesday, Tesla’s X account for ‘Europe & Middle East’ shared the clip of what appears to be a red spoiler on the back of a car, against a red backdrop. Accompanying text said “spoiler alert” while the video displayed the date 29 08 25 (European format for 29 August.)
The brief clip went viral on X racking up more than 590,000 views and receiving over 800 reposts and 4,700 likes from other users.
According to technology publication Electrek the “main suspect” for a possible Tesla product launch is the Model Y Performance electric SUV.
Tesla halted sales of the Model Y Performance in January for a product update. This follows a revamp of the original Model Y which was launched in January, though it didn’t become available globally until May.
In June, 2025, Tesla sold just 8,729 vehicles in the European Union, down 40 percent from the same month a year ago, according to European Automobile Manufacturers Association data. Reuters reported this was the fifth straight month of declining sales in Europe amid growing Chinese competition in the EV market and backlash over fresh tariffs Trump imposed on imports from the continent.
Tesla opened a retro-themed diner in Los Angeles in July featuring Supercharger stations and two drive-in movie screens.
What People Are Saying
Electrek writer Fred Lambert said: “The only thing that I find strange with this likely being the Model Y Performance is the fact that they tweeted this from the Europe and Middle East account.
“It would be strange for the Model Y Performance to launch there first, but who knows. Maybe Tesla started production at Gigafactory Berlin first.
“I don’t think this will have a major impact on Tesla’s business. The Model Y Performance is the least popular version of the bestselling Model Y.”
Speaking to Wired Professor David Bailey, who teaches business economics at the University of Birmingham in the UK, said: “Rather than launching a more mass-market model, Tesla wasted a lot of money on the Cybertruck. And Tesla’s autonomous technology is behind that of Chinese makers.”
What Happens Next
Some kind of Tesla product announcement is now widely expected to take place today, Friday.
