The Batman Part 2 is coming, but so far it’s shrouded in mystery. What’s the story, who’s the villain, and when is it coming out? In this article, we’re answering these questions and more.
With the script almost finished, filming is set to begin at the end of 2025. Robert Pattinson, who is reprising his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne alongside Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, recently commented on the story during his red carpet walk for Mickey 17‘s premier.
“I know what it’s about,” he said, “but I can’t tell anyone, but it’s very cool. It’s very exciting.” Ahead of the rumored release date on October 1, 2027, here’s everything we know about The Batman 2 Part 2.
The Batman 2 Part 2 Story
There’ll be Christmas vibes to The Batman Part 2. That’s because director Matt Reeves has confirmed the film is set during winter, suggesting we’ll see a frosty Gotham blanketed under snow.
It would make the perfect setting for an adaptation of popular Batman comic antagonist the Court of Owls. Making their first full appearance in 2012’s Batman (vol. 2) #6, the Court of Owls is an organization of the wealthiest and most influential citizens in Gotham, and one of Batman’s most dangerous adversaries.
Pattinson himself floated the idea. “I’d love to do something like Court Of Owls,” the actor told Den Of Geek in 2022. “There are elements of The Batman which are kind of horror and I think it really feels quite new for Batman.”
The Batman Part 2 Cast
Who is in The Batman Part 2? Robert Pattinson is of course returning as the Caped Crusader. That’s alongside Zoe Kravitz as his love interest Catwoman/Selina Kyle.
While other members of the core cast haven’t officially been confirmed, it’s safe to assume we’ll see a return from the likes of Andy Serkis as Alfred and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon.
Colin Farrell’s Penguin is also a practical certainty after his impressive performance in the 2024 HBO spinoff series The Penguin, which saw him take home the Golden Globe for Best Actor. Joining him could be Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante, the daughter of deceased crime boss Carmine Falcone, who also shone in the series.
The Batman Part 2 Joker
Every great Batman story needs a compelling antagonist, so who’s it to be for The Batman Part 2? The frontrunner is the Joker, who made a scene-stealing appearance at the end of The Batman. Played with menace by Barry Keoghan, he meets Paul Dano’s Riddler during the pair’s overlapping incarceration at Arkham Asylum.
It was brief, but a deleted scene that was released on YouTube stretches the interaction to five minutes and gives us a better glimpse at what looks like the most disturbing Joker yet.
Keoghan himself set the record straight about his involvement in The Batman Part 2, telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast, “If the opportunity came about, yes, I’d love to explore, and given the opportunity, really dive into it. But I have not been contacted, I’ve not heard anything.”
The Batman Part 2 Villain
If we don’t see the Joker face off against Batman in The Batman Part 2, however, there are plenty of alternative contenders waiting in the rogue’s gallery. The winter setting might lend itself to another classic villain: Mr Freeze.
“To me it would be a challenge in an interesting way to try and figure out how that could happen,” Reeves said at a press event in February 2022 (via Collider). “Even the idea of something like Mr. Freeze, that’s such a great story, right? I think there’s actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great.”
Hush is another villain we might see in The Batman Part 2. “I think Hush is a really interesting one to do,” Reeves wrote on X when asked by a fan for his favorite villain. “I’ll choose Hush, but that doesn’t mean the next [villain] will be Hush. I just want to say, there are so many.”
What Happened in The Batman?
Riddler blows up the seawall at the end of The Batman, flooding the streets of Gotham and decimating the city. Batman gets his man, though, locking Riddler in Arkham Asylum and putting an end to his reign of chaos.
The final scenes see Batman helping the clean-up services start to rebuild Gotham, although during a voiceover he says crime will be at an all-time high. Not only will other criminal organizations rush to fill the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone, but The Penguin is more powerful than ever with no one to hold him back.
That’s not to mention Riddler and Joker establishing a connection in Arkham, potentially joining forces to give Batman and the people of Gotham an even bigger headache.
Is The Batman Part 2 in the DC Universe?
The Batman Part 2 is not in the DCU. Instead of taking place in the same universe as Superman and the rest of the Justice League, it’s its own self-contained cinematic universe. Gunn confirmed this in January 2023, saying The Batman Part 2 and related projects will remain separate.
The reason for that is tone. Reeves has established a gritty, grounded world at odds with the more fantastical elements of the DCU, in which 30ft monsters roam cities and aliens exist. This means it’s unlikely Pattinson’s Batman will ever meet David Corenswet’s Superman, but given how jarring such an encounter would be, that’s probably for the best.
The Batman Part 2 Trailer
There is no trailer for The Batman Part 2. Shooting has yet to begin on the film, so right now there’s nothing to see – no footage, behind-the-scenes shots, movie posters, or even concept art.
The earliest we’ll likely see the debut trailer for The Batman Part 2 will be mid-2026, after filming finishes. That said, DC and Warner Bros. will want to lay a long promotional trail, peppering fans with plenty of teasers between now and release.
The Batman Part 2 Release Date
The film is set for release on October 1, 2027, and will start shooting later in 2025. It’s been a long road. The sequel to 2022’s The Batman was officially confirmed during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation on April 26, 2022, meaning there will be five years between films.
Delays have played a part. The film was initially set for release on October 3, 2025. After, a release window of October 2026 was tentatively penciled in, but again, it fell through.
DC co-CEO James Gunn said of the wait, “To be fair, a five year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. Seven years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. Seven years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, six years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”
