The Boston Red Sox are in a bit of a tough spot this offseason. Rather than having an exciting offseason full of free agency signings, the Red Sox have made a few trades, but haven’t been active in free agency.
As a result, the Red Sox reportedly lost Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Bregman agreed to a five year deal with Chicago, per multiple reports.
This deal has left the Red Sox in a tough position. They desperately need another infielder to replace Bregman, but the options are limited in free agency. Bo Bichette is a clear option for the Red Sox to pursue, but they could also go after a star on the trade block.
Prediction: Chicago Cubs trade Nico Hoerner to the Red Sox after reportedly agreeing to a deal with Alex Bregman
The Cubs don’t need Nico Hoerner after reportedly stealing Bregman from the Red Sox. So why couldn’t the Cubs trade Hoerner to Boston?
This would fit both teams. The Red Sox could part ways with a few prospects to land the talented infielder while the Cubs would benefit in the long run.
For Chicago, Bregman is the man at the hot corner for the next five years. Top prospect Matt Shaw is expected to slide over to second base. Hoerner should be on the move in the coming weeks.
For Boston, Marcelo Mayer could slide over to third base and replace Bregman. Kristian Campbell doesn’t seem ready for an everyday role in the lineup, plus he’s been moved to the outfield on occasion. Adding Hoerner at second base isn’t a blockbuster move, but it’s better than nothing.
