A couple in Colorado recently learned they received more than they bargained for after buying a cow on Facebook when the cow unexpectedly delivered a calf, turning the deal into a surprise buy-one-get-one deal.
Meredith Weber and her husband, Travis, saw a cow named Fiona pop up for sale on Facebook and immediately fell in love. She told Newsweek via email that they’ve purchased several cows from Facebook before, but Fiona stood out. The three-year-old Highland Heifer was raised as a pet, only sharing a pen with a goat. She has never been around other cows—or so they thought.
The couple performs nightly checks, as they have several cows expecting calves soon, Weber said. They walk around to see how close they might be to delivery. Fiona never showed signs of pregnancy, but during a recent nightly check, Weber noticed Fiona had isolated herself from the far end of the pasture.
“I saw a tiny creature bouncing around her, but couldn’t wrap my mind around what it could possibly be!” she said. “I thought at first maybe a dog. I pointed it out to my husband, and that’s when he said, ‘That’s a calf!'”
Stunned, Weber began recording, which she posted to her TikTok account @meredith_rn_wcc on September 20. You can hear the surprise in her voice as she walked closer to Fiona and her baby. She said they could not process what they were seeing, as they ran through the possible scenarios that this must’ve happened.
The couple called Fiona’s previous owner, who Weber said was just as confused and shocked as they were. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, the previous owner called his neighbor. The neighbor revealed that Fiona wandered toward the property about nine months ago after a strong windstorm blew the panels of her pen down. There, Fiona met the neighbor’s miniature bucking bull before the neighbor returned her.
“We had planned to breed [Fiona] to our miniature bull, so this new development had definitely thrown a bit of a wrench in things,” Weber said. “Plus, we had no idea what type of bull she was bred to, so it might not have had a desirable outcome.”
But fast forward to now, and Fern has arrived. Weber said the calf has been doing great. She inherited her father’s jumping and bucking abilities, which makes the couple laugh.
The couple worried no one would want to adopt an “odd cross-breed,” but Fern and another one of their calves have been adopted together. They live on a family-owned farm, which runs a pumpkin patch, petting zoo and takes the cows on field trips to the public library for kids to meet them, Weber said.
And for Fiona? Weber said she’s been great and is expecting another calf in the spring.
Viewer Reactions
The TikTok video quickly went viral, bringing in over 6.6 million views, 574,800 likes and 3,770 comments as of Friday, with many viewers poking fun at the cow’s secret, calling it “Immaculate cowseption.”
“Fiona is the newest cast member of Teen Mom Farm Edition, hiding that pregnancy like that,” wrote one person.
Another joked: “Fiona’s looking at you like, ‘I called for help TWICE.'”
