The New York Yankees carved out a win against the division leading Toronto Blue Jays to end their latest series and now they have just six more series to go before the end of the regular season.
As the team looks to climb into the division lead and drive a deep playoff run, some significant roster moves could be ahead. Yankees insider Joel Sherman predicted that will mean moving Anthony Volpe out of the everyday shortstop spot as his role increasingly comes into doubt.
“Anthony Volpe is coming off a rough game Sunday, lost at the plate with an 0-for-3 and three strikeouts, with some swings indicating he was either indecisive or badly fooled,” Pete Caldera wrote for NorthJersey.com. “But with Jose Caballero available and able to impact games with his speed (he leads the AL with 43 steals) and daring, he ought to be an increasing option for (manager Aaron) Boone down the stretch.”
Boone has persistently defended Volpe in public, but his struggles could be reaching a point where the manager has little choice but to bench him in favor of a more competitive option for the remaining games.
And when legendary franchise shortstop Derek Jeter was asked what advice he would give to Volpe at this crossroads in his young career, the Hall of Famer offered three simple words.
“Gotta keep working,” Jeter said, according to Max Goodman of NJ.com.
Jeter offered his assessment of Volpe during a recent charity gala hosted by his former teammate, CC Sabathia.
“From everything I’ve seen, he’s got a lot of support from his teammates and from the front office,” Jeter added, per Goodman. “That’s a good sign. So, you just gotta go out there and try to be as consistent as possible.”
At this point, Volpe has little choice but to keep working at a turnaround and try to be as consistent as possible in the opportunities he has remaining. But with the final stretch ahead and Caballero offering a compelling alternative on the roster, those opportunities could start to dwindle in the near future.
