After scoring 83 points on March 10, Miami Heat All-Star Bam Adebayo took his victory lap, which led him to appear on “The Dan Patrick Show.” Patrick asked Adebayo what Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson, his girlfriend, does better than him on the basketball floor. Adebayo said, “Everything.”
That’s not a demerit on Adebayo. Wilson is better than everyone at basketball. She’s the reigning WNBA MVP, Finals MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and WNBA champion — the first player to achieve all of those in a single season. She’s also the only player to have won four league MVPs in its history, and she’ll attempt to win her fourth championship ring this season.
But Adebayo now has bragging rights as the better pranker.
On Monday, TBS aired its latest episode of “Foul Play with Anthony Davis” — long live “Punk’d” — featuring Adebayo completely fooling Wilson. To start, the basketball power couple arrives at a private court to work out together. Nothing conspicuous about that. A man and his daughter asked for Adebayo and Wilson’s autographs. Adebayo sneaks off to the secret control room and says to the camera, “Sorry, I gotta do this to you, sweets.”
This had nothing to do with the prank, but it must be noted that Adebayo was brave enough to let out a monstrous toot on national television. He walks away to the control room, leaving Wilson aghast and alone. Kobe, the aforementioned girl from the front desk, apprehensively approaches Wilson with “a problem” and exposes her purported dad as an autograph fraudster.
“My dad gets athletes to come practice here, and he gets them to sign things, and he takes video or pictures, and then he taught my brother and I to forge signatures,” Kobe says. “He makes hundreds of basketballs, jerseys, and sells them for a lot of money online.”
Kobe asks Wilson for her help, and saint that she is, Wilson says, “I got you.” Wilson follows Kobe to the “forgery room,” but she quickly leaves for a phone call. Adebayo rejoins Wilson, and Wilson fills in Adebayo on the “weird” situation. Adebayo displays exceptional acting skills, never giving off that he’s in on it. Eventually, Kobe asks Wilson to confront her dad, which Wilson does.
As the fake family gets into a heated argument, debating the legality of their scheme, Wilson keeps her cool and handles the “super sketchy” confrontation masterfully. She removes herself, where a grinning Adebayo informs her she’s been pranked. Her reaction is priceless.
