Authorities have been forced to close a long stretch of Highway 1 as the Timber Fire continues to burn out of control in Big Sur.
The fire has ballooned from 800 acres Monday morning to more than 1,700 acres Monday afternoon at only 5% containment.
A 16-mile stretch of Highway 1 has now been closed because of the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol, between Point Sur Lighthouse and Partington Canyon.
Evacuations are ongoing, but residents are still being allowed through the highway closure to get out of harm’s way.
The Timber Fire erupted around 9:38 p.m. Saturday southeast of Loma Vista in Los Padres National Forest, according to the US Forest Service.
The blaze is burning through steep, rugged terrain, making it difficult for firefighters to reach the flames and contain the fire.
The cause of the Timber Fire is currently unknown.
