Jacksonville Jaguars selected Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and while his rookie season featured flashes of promise, it was ultimately cut short by a season-ending right knee injury in early November.
Hunter was widely viewed as a rare two-way talent coming out of college, and he made it clear he wanted to continue playing both wide receiver and cornerback at the NFL level. Jacksonville appeared willing to explore that approach, though questions remained about how to best deploy him.
One of the sticking points, according to reports, was that the Jaguars did not appear to consult closely with Deion Sanders — Hunter’s former head coach at Colorado, where Sanders coached him for three seasons and helped develop him as a two-way standout.
Sanders didn’t hold back when discussing the situation on “Garrett Bush’s The Barbershop” podcast.
“Even a guy like Travis Hunter, being drafted to Jacksonville, and I’ve had him for the last three, don’t you think you would want to talk to me to let me know, to ask me how — what gets him going and what backs him off and, and what, like, you wouldn’t want to know that?” Sanders said.

Earlier this month, Liam Coen said the plan for Travis Hunter has not changed, despite speculation that he could be used primarily on defense.
“The plan has not changed at all,” Coen said. “He’s going to play both sides of the football just as we drafted him to do. We have the same vision for him in terms of being able to give him opportunities.”
As a rookie, Hunter split his workload between both sides of the ball, playing roughly 61% of his snaps on offense and 37% on defense.
