France enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the tournament’s most heavily backed contenders.
Despite a 2-1 warm-up loss to Ivory Coast on Thursday, June 4, a stunning defeat that has raised some concern, Didier Deschamps’ side remains loaded with elite talent, led by stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Desire Doue, and Michael Olise.
They’ve been placed in Group I, which also features Senegal and Norway, two perceived dark horses in the tournament, along with Iraq. But most projections still expect Les Bleus to advance deep into the knockout rounds, with many analysts viewing them as one of the favorites to lift the trophy in North America.
That expectation has suddenly put a historic World Cup record squarely in Deschamps’ sights.
In a new ESPN analysis examining records likely to fall during the 2026 tournament, reporter Roberto Rojas identified one mark as particularly vulnerable: the all-time World Cup managerial wins record held by legendary West Germany coach Helmut Schön.
Schön coached West Germany from 1966 to 1978, and his 16 World Cup victories have stood for decades. But Deschamps enters the tournament with 14 wins from 19 World Cup matches as France manager, putting him just three wins away from breaking the record.

Since taking over France in 2012, Deschamps has transformed the national team into the sport’s model of consistency.
France reached the quarterfinals in Brazil in 2014, won the World Cup in Russia in 2018, and returned to the final in Qatar in 2022 before falling to Argentina in one of the greatest championship matches ever played.
Across those three tournaments, France has won 14 World Cup games under his leadership.
Deschamps also led Les Bleus to the UEFA Euro 2016 final, where they suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Portugal, and to the UEFA Euro 2024 semifinals, where they were eliminated by eventual champion Spain.
With the 2026 World Cup set to kick off, Deschamps needs just two victories to tie Schön’s record and three to own it outright.
Given France’s group-stage schedule against Senegal, Iraq, and Norway, the record could realistically fall before we even get to the knockout rounds.
And if France goes all the way again, another record becomes attainable. Only Vittorio Pozzo (Italy) has won two World Cups as a manager. Deschamps enters 2026 with a chance to join him in one of soccer’s most exclusive clubs.
France opens the tournament against Senegal on June 16 at 3:00 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
