Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California said Monday that he will resign from Congress following multiple sexual assault allegations that have triggered bipartisan calls for him to step down.
The announcement caps a rapid political downfall for the seven‑term lawmaker, who was widely viewed as a frontrunner in California’s race for governor earlier this year before suspending his campaign as the allegations emerged. Swalwell has continued to deny the claims.
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said on social media. “I will fight the serious false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
Just three days earlier, the married father of three vowed to contest the accusations he faced.
“Hear it directly from me.,” Swalwell posted on X late Friday. “These allegations are flat false. And I will fight them.”
