One of President Donald Trump’s closest Christian allies told Newsweek on Wednesday that he was glad the president did not mean to depict himself as Jesus, following a now-deleted post on social media.
Franklin Graham, an evangelist who previously advised the president on getting into Heaven, was reacting to Trump’s post on Monday, an AI-generated image that appeared to show him as Jesus. Trump later said it was meant to show him as a doctor.
“I’m thankful the President has clarified that this was not at all what he intended and has removed the post,” Graham, who is president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, told Newsweek Wednesday via email.
Trump faced backlash from Christians in recent days over the image, with several church leaders saying they were also alarmed by his rhetoric toward the pope.
The president posted a new image showing him alongside Jesus on Truth Social on Wednesday, saying, “The Radical Left Lunatics might not like this, but I think it is quite nice!!!”
