Get ready to be fully tanked this Fourth of July weekend.
With gas prices up by nearly 40% since February, some of your favorite retailers and grocery stores have done the unthinkable — become charitable by offering giant savings.
Ahead of July 4, companies like Amazon, JCPenney, Walmart and more are giving customers some much-needed extra mileage help. As of July 1, the national average is $3.84 for regular gas, according to data from AAA.
Hawaii leads the US with its average pump price of regular gas at $5.48 a gallon. For the cheapest fill, head to Indiana, as the statewide average is a cool $3.15.
But fear not, your favorite massive corporations have come to the rescue. The Post put together a roundup of all the companies to scrape some savings from. First up, Amazon.
The e-commerce behemoth is handing out a 50-cent-per-gallon discount on fuel during the Fourth of July weekend for Prime members. This is separate from the years-long deal giving Prime members a 10-cent-per-gallon discount.
Prime, Prime Access and Prime for Young Adults members can save 50-cents per gallon on one fuel purchase from July 2 to July 5, at over 7,500 bp, Amoco, and participating ampm and Thorntons locations across the US.
“Summer is a time for making memories, and Prime is here to make entertaining more affordable,” said Carmen Nestares, vice president, North America Prime and Marketing Tech at Amazon.
In addition to the full tank, the retailer will also fork over a $5 monthly grocery credit from July through September for Prime Access members. It will automatically be applied at checkout on orders of $25 or more. Or up to $15 in grocery savings over the summer.
JCPenney is also getting into the gas game with its “Fuel Up and Save” event. The one-day savings is happening on Friday, July 3, and customers who bring any gas station receipt into any JCPenney store will get $10 off a $10 purchase.
“You’re already heading to the gas pump, so why not use the opportunity to put some money back in your pocket?” said Michelle Wlazlo, Brand CEO of JCPenney.
Just note that the gas receipt may be digital or printed.
Walmart also offers fuel benefits for any Walmart+ member. Folks can save 10 cents per gallon at over 13,000 stations nationwide, including Exxon, Mobil, Walmart & Murphy stations.
The retail giant also offers tire protection at no additional cost.
For those filling up at Walmart and Sam’s Club Fuel Stations, just open the Walmart app and complete the following:
- Select Services at the bottom of the page
- Select Member prices on fuel
- Select Pay at Pump
- Scan the QR code on the pump screen
- Select your payment method in Walmart Pay
- Select your fuel grade
- Start pumping
For other stations, head to the Walmart website for instructions on how to grab your fuel savings.
Safeway grocery stores allow shoppers to earn points through the free Safeway for U loyalty program. Customers can then use those points to save up to $1 per gallon on gas at participating Chevron, Texaco, and Safeway fuel stations.
To earn points, shoppers get one point for every $1 spent on groceries and pharmacy items, and two points for every $1 spent on gift cards. However, there are special multiplier events where folks can score four times the points on certain products.
For fuel rewards, every 100 points gives you 10 cents off per gallon. You can accumulate and stack rewards for up to $1 off per gallon and it’s usable on up to 25 gallons in a single fill-up.
Just be aware that gas rewards expire at the end of the month following the month in which they were earned.
Another grocery chain topping off tanks is Hy-Vee through its Fuel Saver program. The program is free for Hy-Vee shoppers and allows them to earn five cents per gallon for every $50 spent on groceries.
The chain also offers a membership — Perks Plus — where shoppers can earn exclusive Fuel Saver rewards with your qualifying in-store or online purchases. Perks Plus members also get free delivery on catering, floral and bakery orders.
For $99 per year or $12.95 per month, members can see:
- Spend $50, get 10¢
- Spend $100, get 20¢
- Spend $200, get 50¢
To score the savings, shoppers will be given a Hy-Vee Fuel Saver + Perks card or key-in your Fuel Rewards Alt ID that customers must swipe or enter before paying.
