Fans have been quick to praise Olivia Rodrigo’s new single “drop dead,” with one early listener calling it the “best lead single by a mile,” shortly after the song was released on April 17.
The track arrives alongside an accompanying music video filmed at night at the Palace of Versailles in France. “drop dead” is the first single from Rodrigo’s upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Almost immediately after its release, fans noted that the song represents a clear shift from the heartbreak‑driven lead singles that previously launched Rodrigo’s albums.
Who Is Olivia Rodrigo?
Rodrigo, 23, first rose to global prominence with emotionally raw songs such as “driver’s license” and “vampire,” tracks that centered on betrayal, longing and unresolved breakups. The song “drop dead” stands apart as a buoyant, romantic, if bittersweet, love song—a notable departure that listeners describe as her happiest lead release to date.
On TikTok, where fan reaction quickly gained momentum, creator @liv.zone described the song as “the best lead single by a mile.” Another TikTok user, @mccallmirabella, posted a clip of herself dancing and singing along, writing: “POV: [point of view] Olivia Rodrigo just released her best song.”
The song is widely understood by fans to reflect Rodrigo’s relationship with British Enola Holmes actor Louis Partridge, 22.
The pair first met in the fall of 2023 and were later linked publicly. They quickly became a fan-favorite couple attending A-List events together and being frequently photographed. Still, breakup rumors emerged in December 2025, and the two have since separated.
Fans have also pointed out that “drop dead” includes a musical reference to Just Like Heaven by The Cure—a song Rodrigo has previously cited as one of her favorites. The nod further fueled conversation about the track’s romantic tone and nostalgic influence.
The music video reinforces that mood. Shot in part at the Palace of Versailles, the visual blends glossy grandeur with footage that appears to be filmed on VHS or treated with a retro filter, giving it a slightly softened, whimsical, throwback feel. The stylistic choice stood out immediately to viewers, many of whom shared clips of the video across social platforms within hours of its release.
One TikTok video featuring a snippet of the Versailles footage sparked detailed fan speculation.
A viewer commented: “She said it was the ‘first chapter’ of the album but, the album is called ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’, so… Does this mean she will tell us the ‘chapters’ of their relationship from its beginning until it ends in a sad ending?”
Rodrigo has not publicly addressed her split from Partridge, but she has recently been linked to a new relationship. On April 14, TMZ photographed the singer having dinner in Los Angeles with Cameron Winter, the 24-year-old frontman of indie rock band Geese. Neither has commented on the nature of their relationship.
Rodrigo, whose debut album Sour and follow‑up Guts made her one of pop music’s most-successful young artists, has built a reputation for emotionally direct songwriting. With “drop dead,” fans say she is opening a new chapter.
