Three men were allegedly about to carry out a gangland hit on a man attending a daycare pick-up before tactical police officers intercepted the would-be assassins in two vehicles on a busy road in Sydney’s south-west on Tuesday afternoon.

Police allegedly seized multiple firearms and jerry cans containing fuel from the two vehicles, which were left peppered with holes from bean bag rounds, after the tactical operation at about 3.40pm in Revesby.

The two vehicles were stopped after detectives at Condell Park identified three men – Greall Tighe, 18, Kevin Mundine, 19, and Tyrone Tuiluga Rio, 26 – allegedly preparing an organised crime hit on another man attending a daycare centre. Police intercepted the two vehicles on The River Road, the main artery of Revesby.

The murder plot is related to an internal feud within a south-east Asian organised crime syndicate, police allege.

State crime commander, Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook, told media it would be unsafe to disclose information about the identity of the intended target,

“They were never going to be allowed to make it to the centre,” he added.

“The collateral damage there would be far too great.”

The head of the Organised Crime Squad, Detective Superintendent Peter Faux, said police weren’t “conclusively certain” which daycare centre the men were heading towards, but were sure there was “never any risk to the public” as they made the arrests.
