A home renovation video about a couple who spot a mismatch in their newly installed bathroom tiles has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip shared by Jas & Joel (@jasminarennie) has racked up 2.3 million views since it was shared on June 30, igniting debate on whether the apparent mistake even matters.
The video begins with text overlaid on it saying: “Oh no, you couldn’t write this.” In it, Joel stares at the tiles near the bottom of a shower stall and says: “I honestly don’t get it. Like, how has that happened?” Two tiles appear to be slightly different in color, catching the couple by surprise.
Jas flips on the light switch, and upon seeing the effect, gasps and exclaims “Joel, no!”
“I don’t even know what to say,” Joel responds. “Every single tile is from the same batch.” He points to the other side of the bathroom and explains: “The second batch I ordered recently was for this side and that’s all fine.”
“I actually can’t believe that…that is two different colors,” Jas says.
Sitting on the bathroom floor next to the mismatched tiles, Joel adds: “I don’t get it. Why? How has that happened? I originally thought it was because of how the light was coming through the window.”
The caption attached to the post simply reads: “I can’t cope.”
The video comes at a time when home renovation is surging. According to a recent survey by the home design website Houzz, median home renovation spending in the U.S. rose from $15,000 in 2020 to $24,000 last year, marking a 60 percent increase.
Kitchens were the most commonly renovated interior room (with 29 percent of those surveyed having done so last year, followed by guest bathrooms (27 percent) and primary bathrooms (25 percent), the survey found.
‘Upset Over That?’
The couple’s reaction in the viral clip touched a nerve among viewers on TikTok—some empathetic, others baffled.
“Is this a skit?? Are they seriously upset over that?!” one commenter, LLB, asked, while JohnFederici added: “These guys are satire, right?”
Others took a more relaxed view, noting that the variation was common. User Oliver hore wrote: “Stop stressing, it’s fine,” while user appleuser93734248 commented: “It literally looks fine. Natural stone has variation.”
“Natural tile has huge variations in color,” said Just Cool Buildings.
Another user, Lance, provided a more technical explanation, saying: “You do have large format tile with a variation in color from top to bottom. You can clearly see some tiles are darker at the top and get lighter toward the bottom. So, whoever made the cut on the right side ended up using the lighter section for the left side of the tile, and now it stands out. But that’s also the beauty of natural stone and tile is those imperfections and inconsistencies.”
“Looks fine,” said user anthony_s2000. “You just picked the dark area of one tile and put it next to the light area of another tile.”
