One month after the Brisbane City Council launched its new bus network – and began rolling metro vehicles along its second route – busway bottlenecks have been reduced by as much as 30 per cent, says the Lord Mayor.

Speaking to ABC Radio Brisbane this morning, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said congestion along Victoria Bridge had drastically reduced.

“We’re seeing patronage going up, we’re seeing less queuing, and less delays in the network, and that is the critical thing in a growing city because, in the end, people expect more services as our city grows,” Schrinner said.

He said he expected CBD streets to clear with the upcoming Adelaide Street tunnel opening, slated for the end of September.

With more than 2.6 million people having taken the Metro since its permanent launch in late January, the council expected to sign a new contract with the state government for 70 new buses.

“We have 600 people moving here [to live in Brisbane] every week, so if you feel like the city is getting busier – the roads are getting busier – it’s because they are, and we need better public transport,” Schrinner said.

“This Metro project not only provides more seats, but also reduces the congestion and improves reliability… it’s exactly what we needed.”
