Internet provider iiNet has suffered a data breach, with about 10,000 customers having their street addresses, phone numbers and usernames taken by hackers.
The company, which is owned by TPG, said the incident occurred over the weekend and early investigations suggest the unauthorised access was gained using stolen account credentials from an employee.

About 280,000 active email addresses and 20,000 landline phone numbers were accessed, along with usernames, street addresses, phone numbers and modem set-up passwords. The company has begun emailing affected customers.
“We can confirm no credit, banking or financial information have been compromised,” the company told this masthead through a spokesman.
“No driver’s licence numbers, ID documentation details or bank account details were disclosed as a result of this incident.”
iiNet said the incident occurred on Saturday, and it had engaged authorities including the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Australian Signals Directorate. The company has set up a dedicated hotline at 1300 861 036 for any customer concerns.
“We unreservedly apologise to the iiNet customers impacted by this incident,” TPG Telecom chief executive Inaki Berroeta said in a statement.
