While Rory McIlroy continues to pull away at the top of the leaderboard at The Masters on day two, Brooks Koepka proved he’s far from out of the running with a brilliant second round score.
Many golf fans would be forgiven for thinking that Koepka, a five-time Majors champion, had lost his edge since joining the LIV Golf League back in 2022.
But, he turned his back on the breakaway venture and returned to the PGA Tour for this season, and it seems that was the right decision for the 35-year-old.
After a solid if unremarkable even par on the opening day at Augusta National, Koepka turned in a three-under on day two and climbed the leaderboard to put himself right in contention going into the weekend.
Rory McIlroy Relieved That Awkward Masters Moment Will Never Happen Again
Koepka registered four birdies on the front nine and a further two around Amen Corner on the way back. Were it not for a trio of bogeys, the former PGA Championship and US Open champion could have been pushing McIlroy even closer.
Speaking after his round, Koepka told Sky Sports: “I just need to keep battling it out. I feel good, I’m putting it in the right spots. Now I just need to clean a few things up, there were a few sloppy bogeys but I feel good.”
Still, Koepka is now certain to be playing the entire weekend, and if he keeps playing this kind of solid, confident golf, we could well see him challenging for that elusive Green Jacket come Sunday evening.
Currently ranked 169 in the world, Koepka will be hungry to show the world he’s still got what it takes to be one of the very best in the game. A former number 1, Koepka was, at one time, on track to clear up the Career Grand Slam, and a Masters victory would leave him with just The Open to finally complete that achievement.
