Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White went viral over the weekend after cameras caught the two having a heated exchange on the sideline during a timeout in the Indiana Fever’s 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire on Saturday.
Ultimately, emotions boiled over in a frustrating game. While disagreements between coaches and star players are common in sports, Clark is the face of the WNBA and someone the cameras are constantly focused on. The attention was amplified by the fact that she scored just six points in 21 minutes while battling foul trouble throughout the contest.
As speculation spread across social media, both Clark and White addressed the incident during Monday’s practice.
“Two people being competitive,” Clark said. “There’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that think they know a lot of things and they’re just blatantly wrong. … I ride for Steph. … Steph has my back.”

White explained that she was simply challenging Clark in the moment, noting that it had been a difficult game for the former Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball star, who was being targeted defensively and picked up five fouls.
“I was challenging a player,” White said. “I don’t often think it becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports. … My relationship with Caitlin is great. I love Caitlin. I ride with her.”
Despite their competitive personalities, Clark and White share the same goal: bringing the championship back to Indiana.
After reaching the conference finals last season despite dealing with a slew of injuries, expectations are high for the Indiana Fever. Through eight games, however, the team sits at 4-4 and has yet to consistently perform at the level many expected entering the season.
