Cavalcade of New Macs Is Coming, Report Says, Starting With M6 MacBook Pro This Fall

Give Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman an atlas and the keys to the car because he knows Apple’s roadmap for every type of Mac the company sells, and it’s quite a ride. From the budget MacBook Neo to the high-end, high-powered Mac Studio, Apple is working on updates to each of its MacBook lines and Mac desktops. We’ll see Mac refreshes as soon as this fall, Gurman says, but others won’t arrive until 2028. 

Join me as we hit the road and cruise chronologically through the Mac updates that Gurman says are on the way.

Coming this fall: M6 MacBook, refreshed iMac

First up will be the first MacBook with Apple’s M6 processor. It will arrive in the shape of the baseline 14-inch MacBook Pro this fall. A redesign does not appear to be a part of this refresh, only an internal update with new Apple silicon. 

A new iMac is expected alongside the new MacBook Pro, which will presumably also get the M6 chip. It’ll have been two years since the last iMac update; Apple released the M4 iMac in the fall of 2024.

We could also see new Mac desktops as early as this fall, but the timing is murky for Mac Mini and Mac Studio refreshes, given the volatility of the global memory supply. Apple is reportedly testing new Mac Minis with the M5 Pro and M6 chips, and new Mac Studio models with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips.

Arriving late this year or early next: OLED MacBook 

The long-rumored touchscreen OLED MacBook is set to arrive as early as the end of the year or at the start of 2027. It’ll be offered in the 14- and 16-inch sizes of Apple’s current MacBook Pros, but it could be called the MacBook Ultra or another name Apple dreams up for it. It’ll be based on M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. In addition to the touchscreen OLED display, this redesign could also replace the camera notch at the top of the display with the Dynamic Island, a feature with which you are likely familiar if you’ve purchased an iPhone in the past few years.

Also expected in early 2027 are refreshes to the MacBook Air. Nothing in the way of a design overhaul but an internal update to M6 silicon for both the 13- and 15-inch models.

Later in 2027: M7 MacBook Pro and new Neo

The MacBook Neo will likely get refreshed sometime around its first anniversary in the spring of 2027. According to Gurman, Apple is testing the next Neo with an A19 Pro chip and more memory. The current model features a meager 8GB of RAM, but the question remains whether it’ll expand to 12GB or double to 16GB – or give you the flexibility to choose one or the other. New colors for the Neo are also likely in the mix for the 2027 refresh.

Following the expected M6 updates this fall, Apple is working toward an M7 refresh for the 14-inch MacBook Pro for the fall of 2027 – right on schedule. Then, at the end of 2027 or early 2028, the higher-end MacBook Pro versions will arrive with M7 Pro and M7 Max options.

Peering into 2028 and beyond

Furthest out on the Mac roadmap are Apple’s plans to bring OLED displays to two other Mac lines. The MacBook Air could receive a touchscreen OLED panel in 2028, which would likely come with a redesign to its look that hasn’t changed since 2022. The next Mac up for an OLED refresh is the iMac, and the timing for such a move is unclear. It would leave the MacBook Neo as the only Mac based on an LCD.
