A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder for allegedly stabbing a man nine times in the chest during an argument over a hat on a busy street in Gosford.

Emergency services were called to Mann Street about 7.30pm on Tuesday following reports of the alleged attack.

Zane Robson, 22, from nearby Springfield, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before he was taken to Gosford Hospital. He died a short time later.

The pair, who police say knew each other, allegedly bumped into each other on a bus and exchanged words before the teenager allegedly chased Robson about 20 metres down the street.

Early on Saturday, police went to a house in the Central Coast suburb of Lake Haven and found the boy hiding under a bed. He was arrested and charged over Robson’s death.

A 45-year-old woman at the property was also taken into custody and charged with hindering the investigation.

The boy did not apply for bail at the Children’s Bail Court on Saturday. His lawyer Javid Faiz said he was seeking to have the matter dealt with under the Mental Health Act.

“It’s a tragic matter. It involves young people. There’s no doubt that this is devastating to the community,” Faiz told Nine News outside the court.

The woman was granted conditional bail ahead of a court mention listed for August 11 at Wyong Local Court.

A fundraising page has been set up on behalf of Robson’s family to cover the costs of his funeral.

“Our family was devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of a much-loved son, grandson, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend,” the site says.

“At just 22 years old, his life was taken far too soon in a senseless act of knife violence in Gosford.
No family is ever prepared for a loss like this.”
