Patrick Mahomes had a sense of urgency for his teammates following the Kansas City Chiefs’ 31-28 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on “Monday Night Football” in Week 5. The two-time NFL MVP said the Chiefs needed to find ways to play better, as they had lost too many games in the early season.

2-3 Kansas City is set to host the 4-1 Detroit Lions on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 6. The Chiefs will need Mahomes to be his best self for the contest, as quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions offense have put up an eye-opening 151 points in their last four outings, 37.8 points per game.

If Mahomes can keep up with Detroit, the 30-year-old quarterback has a chance to make NFL history on Sunday night.

Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Mahomes can surpass Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers as the fastest player (in both the regular season and postseason) to throw for 300 touchdown passes with more completed throw that makes the end zone.

“Aaron Rodgers threw his 300th touchdown pass in his 147th career game, counting the postseason,” Smith wrote. “Currently, that’s the fastest anyone has reached the 300 touchdown pass mark. Mahomes has 299 career touchdown passes in 138 career games.

“So he needs to throw one touchdown in his next eight games to get to 300 faster than Rodgers. It’s safe to say Mahomes will do it with time to spare.”

Mahomes has thrown for 1,257 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He’s added 190 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

The Chiefs are going to need to see more Mahomes magic to keep pace in the AFC West amid a tough schedule to begin the season. Kansas City is one game behind the Los Angeles Chargers for first place in the division.
