Less than 24 hours before their Week 5 showdown against the New York Jets, the Dallas Cowboys made a pretty big decision about a pretty significant injury.

The Cowboys had been hit hard by injuries through the first four games of the season.

Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb missed last week’s tie against the Green Bay Packers with an ankle injury, and some expect him to miss at least a few more additional games.

Aside from Lamb, receiver Kavontae Turpin (foot), running back Miles Sanders (knee/ankle), linebacker Kenneth Murray (knee), defensive end Marshawn Kneeland (ankle), guards Tyler Smith (knee) and Tyler Booker (ankle), and offensive tackle Tyler Guyton (concussion) all appeared on the team’s most recent injury report.

Guyton and Booker have both been ruled out for Sunday’s contest, as was safety Malik Hooker, who’s been battling a toe injury.

But on Saturday, the Cowboys learned that Hooker’s toe injury was serious enough to sideline him for quite a while, and the team placed him on injured reserve, costing him at least the next four games, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Hooker joins a long list of Cowboys players already on IR including wide receiver Jonathan Mingo (knee), center Cooper Beebe (ankle), defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey (back), defensive end Payton Turner (ribs), and cornerbacks Caelen Carson (knee) and Shavon Revel (ACL).

In four games this season, Hooker ranks fourth on the team in tackles (20) and coverage snaps (128). He’s allowed four catches all season for 112 yards and a touchdown.

With Hooker out, the Cowboys will likely lean on Juanyeh Thomas to fill his spot. Thomas has played just 33 coverage snaps through four games and has just one tackle.
