Dana Point beachfront mansions destroyed as hurricane-force waves strike

Massive swells from Tropical Storm Marie battered Orange County beachfront homes over Labor Day weekend — leaving about a dozen uninhabitable.

Aerial footage by NBC’s NewsChopper4 shows the aftermath in Dana Point, where powerful waves damaged ocean-facing decks and other structures.

A Capistrano Bay District representative confirmed that at least 14 homes along Beach Road in Dana Point’s Capistrano Beach were damaged over the weekend, ABC News reported. About a dozen homes were red-tagged and deemed uninhabitable.

Although officials brought in boulders to shield homes from high tides and pounding surf, overnight tides remained too high for crews to install them, according to the news outlet.

Farther north, powerful waves battered the Long Beach Peninsula, sending seawater over a seawall and into homes. Firefighters went door to door Monday night ordering residents at 20 homes between 63rd Place and 67th Place to evacuate.

Residents in Long Beach and nearby Seal Beach scrambled to clear water, sand and debris after the sruf overwhelmed berms over the weekend.

Dangerous 6-to-10-foot waves and severe coastal flooding threaten Los Angeles and Orange County beaches through Tuesday night. Officials warn that strong rip and longshore currents will create life-threatening conditions along south and southwestern-facing shores.

Los Angeles County officials are urging residents not to let Southern California’s typically mild weather lull them into a false sense of security.

“Don’t underestimate the storm,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department warned in a social media post.

More wet weather could be ahead with NOAA forecasting a 50% to 60% chance of above-average precipitation across Southern California and southwestern Arizona from Sept. 9 through Sept. 15.
