Darius Acuff Jr. arrived at Arkansas with immense expectations. And yet somehow, he still blew past it.
A consensus five-star recruit and the No. 1 point guard in the 2025 class, Acuff joined the Razorbacks as the new face of the program under head coach John Calipari.
What followed was one of the most electric freshman campaigns in college basketball history.
Acuff averaged 23.5 points, 6.4 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game, becoming the only player in the country to hit that threshold while shooting 48.4% from the field and 44% from 3-point range.
He led the SEC in both scoring and assists, territory untouched since Pete Maravich, and piled up hardware, including SEC Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, SEC Tournament MVP, and the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard.
Arkansas rode his brilliance to an SEC Tournament title and a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA Tournament, finishing 28–9.
But on Friday night at the John R. Wooden Award ceremony, Acuff shifted the conversation in a different direction. Sitting alongside elite prospects Cameron Boozer and A.J. Dybantsa, Acuff delivered a strong message about coach Calipari.
“He’s a great person, more than a great coach. He cares about you off the court more than he does on the court. He’s gonna teach you about life before basketball,” Acuff said. “It was kind of easy playing for him. He was just teaching us a lot throughout the year, and I definitely learned a lot from him.”
