Diane Keaton may have been a real-life mother of two, but she had several onscreen children throughout her iconic Hollywood career.

News broke on Saturday, October 11, that Keaton died at age 79 in California. She is survived by daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

A spokesperson for her family shared with People that no further details surrounding her death would be shared, asking “for privacy” as they mourn her loss. Us Weekly reached out for comment.

Several of her costars paid tribute to the actress following news of her death, including Mandy Moore, who played one of Daphne Wilder’s (Keaton) daughters Milly Wilder in 2007’s Because I Said So.

“They say don’t meet your heros[sic] but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months. An honor of a lifetime,” Moore wrote, in part, via Instagram. “What an incandescent human Di is and was.”

Mandy Moore

While mourning Keaton’s loss, Moore wrote, in part, via Instagram, “I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”

Kimberly Williams-Paisley

Williams-Paisley — who played Annie Banks, daughter of Nina Banks (Keaton) and George Banks (Steve Martin), in Father of the Bride — also paid tribute to the actress.

“This breaks my heart,” she wrote in an Instagram comment. “Getting to work with Diane Keaton will always be one of the highlights of my life.”

Emma Roberts

Roberts, who starred as Grace’s (Keaton) daughter Michelle in 2023’s Maybe I Do, shared a black-and-white photo of the late actress via her Instagram Story. “The absolute greatest,” Roberts wrote. “So lucky to have worked with her. Love you Diane.”

Olivia Wilde

Wilde paid tribute to Keaton while recalling their time as a mother-daughter duo in 2015’s Love The Coopers. (Keaton portrayed Charlotte Cooper, while Wilde starred as daughter Eleanor Cooper.)

“In 2015 I got to play Diane Keaton’s daughter in a movie called Love The Coopers, which had the most incredibly loving cast you can imagine,” Wilde wrote via Instagram. “I couldn’t believe I got to call her Mom. I took photos of the family bookshelves because it just felt so surreal and I wanted to remember this beautiful set that felt so real. We were a family, singing songs and freezing together in Pittsburgh.”

She continued, “Diane was the heart of the family. Of course. She laughed through night shoots, kept us roaring with laughter constantly actually, and talked to us for hours about love. She told me to keep my heart open. She told me to direct. She told me to be brave. She told me to keep laughing. She loved Rihanna (loved is an understatement) and played this song constantly. I hate that she’s gone, but I love that she was here, and for a brief moment, I got to bask in her immaculate energy.”

Sarah Jessica Parker

Parker initially collaborated with Keaton in 1996’s First Wives Club before reuniting nine years later in The Family Stone. In the 2005 film, the late actress portrayed matriarch Sybil Stone — who disapproved of Meredith Morton’s (Parker) relationship with son Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney.)

“Diane Keaton has been a point of inspiration for countless actresses,” Parker wrote via Instagram. “I include myself among those who loved and admired her. I was very privileged to witness her singular skill and talent on both First Wives Club and The Family Stone.”

She continued, I will cherish those memories on set as well her touching, delightful and perfectly own cinematic career. Which is a gorgeous legacy of an exquisite person. She will be terribly missed. RIP and Godspeed you glorious creature. X, SJ.”
