A crash that spilled diesel on the Pacific Motorway at Greenslopes has caused traffic into Brisbane to be funnelled through one lane for hours.

Police said a ute that had been towing a trailer suspected to contain a fuel can filled with diesel had crashed and rolled over near exit five about 5.30am.

Officers closed two of the M3’s three northbound lanes while emergency crews cleaned the spill.

The closures remained in place about 7.30am, with heavy traffic stretching up to 16 kilometres from the crash site.

Vehicles commuting along the M3 reported speeds from 5km/h up to 12km/h.

The driver of the ute suffered cuts to the head, and was treated at the scene before being taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition.
