The Los Angeles Dodgers are going for a three-peat next season and have already shown that they are not leaving things to chance.
The Dodgers signed Edwin Díaz and Kyle Tucker this offseason. Tucker was the best overall free agent, and Díaz was the best reliever on the market. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicted they would make another splash at the trade deadline by trading for CJ Abrams of the Washington Nationals.
Abrams is only 25 years old and is under club control through 2028. The new president of baseball operations in Washington, Paul Toboni, may be OK with turning Abrams into prospects and starting from the ground up. Abrams has already been named an All-Star and could reach his full potential with the Dodgers.
He is not a great shortstop defensively, but the Dodgers don’t need him to play shortstop. He could slot in at second base. The Dodgers were reportedly interested in signing Bo Bichette to a short-term deal to play second base before they signed Tucker.
Abrams has 57 home runs in the last three seasons. Adding him would create problems for Tommy Edman and Hyeseong Kim in terms of playing time. However, it’s not in the Dodgers’ nature to let that stop them. Abrams could thrive in a lineup where he will not have to be a primary source of production.
