A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Italian city of Naples overnight, causing damage to buildings and property and sparking fear among residents.

Italian seismologists said the tremor hit at 1:25 a.m. local time on Thursday at a shallow depth of two miles, the BBC reported. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 4.2 earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

It was one of the strongest earthquakes Naples has felt in recent years. Two smaller tremors followed the biggest.

Naples is close to the Campi Flegrei, a large volcano that sits along with Vesuvius on the Campanian volcanic arc, which is prone to seismic activity.

This is a developing story and more information will be added shortly.
