Square Enix held its Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival on Friday, showing off what’s next for the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The final big surprise of the show was the reveal of a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 that’s coming in August.

FF14 on the Switch 2 marks the first time the MMORPG, which launched in 2010, has made its way to a Nintendo platform. In the short clip of the game being played on the Switch 2, it does appear to be a faithful port of the game to Nintendo’s newest portable console, but it will come with an additional cost to those FF14 players who want to play this newest version — and we don’t know how much it’ll be just yet.

Since FF14 is a subscription-based MMORPG, players need to buy the game as well as pay for a monthly subscription. The subscription can run from $13 to $15 and depends on the number of characters a player wants on their account.

The wrinkle for the Switch 2 version is that it will require its own unique subscription. This means that for those FF14 players already on other platforms, such as PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Mac (all of which can be played on the same umbrella subscription), if they want to also play on Nintendo’s handheld console, they will have to purchase the Switch 2 version of the game as well as pay the extra monthly subscription cost for that version. Cross-progression is still available on the Switch 2 for FF14 players, which will allow them to use the same character across all platforms.

Note that this Nintendo-specific extra charge is not related to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and players won’t need the latter to play FF14 on a Switch 2.

It appears this additional subscription charge came after “many months of discussion with Nintendo,” the FF14 team said on the festival’s stream. To make up for this additional fee players will have to deal with, Square Enix is making the first month of FF14 on Switch 2 free. Those who do have an FF14 subscription on another platform will also receive a 50% discount for the Switch 2 subscription.

Square Enix didn’t immediately respond to a request for confirmation of the Switch 2 version’s game and subscription pricing.

The other big news from the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival was that of the next expansion for the game. Evercold is set to release January 2027. The expansion will include two new jobs for characters to play as, a higher level cap of 110, new cities to explore and more dungeons and raids to complete.

Also coming with the Evercold expansion is a new raid series that will feature a crossover with the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. A short teaser of this raid series was shown, but it didn’t provide any additional details about what it would consist of or what content from the beloved, bizarre anime would be included.

Square Enix didn’t provide a price for the Evercold expansion, but expansions typically retail for $40.
