Morocco hopes to end its 50-year wait for the Africa Cup of Nations crown on Sunday when it will face Senegal in this year’s final. And one would struggle to argue against these being the two most deserving teams to have made the deciding matchup in Rabat, where Sadio Mane will hope to land his second AFCON title.
Mane ousted former Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah from the competition after his goal gifted Senegal a 1-0 win over Egypt in Wednesday’s semi-final. The Lions of Teranga advanced to the last hurdle as a result and will now contest their third final in the past four editions of the continental competition.
The Atlas Lions got the better of Nigeria on penalties in their own semi, with the two teams having seen out a bore draw at the end of regulation time and extra time. And Morocco will have a home crowd at its back in Rabat, returning to the final after a 21-year hiatus and having won its only AFCON crown to date back in 1976.
Senegal has got this far on the back of a stringent defense first and foremost, with Wednesday’s win over Egypt representing its fourth clean sheet in six tournament outings. Morocco, meanwhile, will be looking to Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz to make the difference in attack as he leads the race for the AFCON Golden Boot on five goals thus far.
